May is Asian Heritage Month
May is Asian Heritage Month in Canada. It was first declared in 2002. The month is a time to learn about the history and hardships endured by Asians in Canada, and to celebrate the community’s long and rich contributions to our shared history.
The Asian-Canadian population makes up almost 20% of the overall Canadian population, and is growing at a slightly faster rate than the general population.
Canadians of Asian heritage have contributed enormously to Canada’s history and community despite facing systemic prejudice and adversity. Legislation limiting their immigration, their access to employment, and their right to full citizenship have all been put forth and enacted at some point in Canada’s history.
The JLP is proud to take part in the conversation around identifying, naming, confronting and fighting racial discrimination including anti-Asian discrimination in the federal public service.
Throughout Asian Heritage Month, we celebrate all Canadians of Asian descent.
