May 1st is International Workers’ Day

May 1st is International Workers’ Day, a day to recognize and celebrate the achievements of the labour movement. The date commemorates the 1884 resolution by the American Federation of Organized Trades and Labour Unions’, which called for the implementation of the eight-hour workday. Though the eight-hour workday was not adopted for many years, this marked a pivotal moment in the global movement for workers’ rights.

Four hands in a circle clasp each others’ wristsThe JLP proudly supports the spirit of International Workers’ Day through learning opportunities that promote meaningful dialogue and collaboration between union and management. Workshops like Understanding the Collective Agreement and Labour-Management Consultation – available both as in-person workshops and virtual discussions – help deepen participants’ understanding of the roles and responsibilities of union and management. Additionally, the JLP’s Occupational Health and Safety in-person training empowers committee members with knowledge and tools needed to fulfill their responsibilities and contribute to safer, healthier work environments.

The JLP recognizes the significance of this day and acknowledges that the struggle to improve working conditions for employees is ongoing. The program is proud to play a role in improving the workplace for everybody in the federal public service.
