Black History Month 2016

Every year throughout the month of February, Canadians recognize Black History Month. It is a time to commemorate the history and honour the significant achievements and contributions made by Black Canadians within Canada’s cultural heritage.

By celebrating Black History Month we are honouring our shared history in Canada but also recognizing and deepening our understanding of the unique history and the historical oppression of People of African descent.

Public Service Alliance of Canada developed a brief timeline of the history of slavery in Canada. Although this is not an exhaustive timeline, as new information is regularly being put forward about the enslavement of African peoples in Canada, this timeline will provide a broad overview by focusing on some key known points. The Historica Canada website also provides several important facts and articles about Black History in Canada.

Events will be held across the country, so be sure to check which activities will be organized in your area!
